Bykhov is a city in Mogilev region, district center. The city has been known as "Old Bykhov" since the 14th century. At various times it was in the possession of the Lithuanian prince Svidrigailo, the princes Gashtold, the magnates Chodkiewicz, and Lev Sapieha. In the early 17th century, Chodkiewicz, and later Sapieha, turned this settlement into a military fortress. At the same time, the large Bykhov Castle was erected. In the early 18th century, the city was under siege twice. In 1706, Peter the Great visited Bykhov during a trip to Kyiv. During the first partition of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in 1772, Bykhov went to Russia. Until the 1990s, Bykhov housed a garrison of the Baltic Fleet naval aviation and a missile carrier base.
