Gorki was first mentioned in written sources in 1544 as a village. The first known owner was Prince Drutsky-Gorsky. Since 1584 it belonged to the Sapiehas. In the 17th century the village became the center of the Gory-Gorki estate, until the 19th century it was called Gory-Gorki. Fairs were regularly held here. In 1683 there were 510 houses, there were 2 suburbs: Kazimirovskaya Sloboda and Zarechye. Merchants from Belarusian and Russian cities traded at 3 markets.
From July 9 to August 16, 1708, Peter I was in Gorki during the Northern War of Russia with Sweden.
After the 1st partition of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in 1772, it became part of the Russian Empire as a town in the Orsha province. During the war of 1812, more than 2,000 residents died in the city. In 1829, the estate was confiscated and passed to the tsar's treasury. In 1836, by decree of the Senate, the Gorygoretsk Agricultural School was founded here (opened in 1840), transformed in 1842 into a higher agricultural school, and in 1848 reorganized into the Gorygoretsk Agricultural Institute. In 1857-1859, Konstantin Verenitsyn, the author of "Taras on Parnassus", studied in Gorki. After the uprising of 1863, the institute was transferred to St. Petersburg (but the agricultural school remained in Gorki). At the same time, a post office, a drugstore, and a weather station opened.
In 1897, 6,735 people lived in Gorki, and in 1900 there were 7,990 people, 29 craft workshops, hospitals at educational institutions, and 6 drugstores.
Since January 1, 1919, Gorki was part of the BSSR, and the Gorki Agricultural Institute resumed its work, which was transformed into the Belarusian Agricultural Academy in 1925. The famous writer M. Goretsky taught here. On July 17, 1924, Gorki became the center of the district. In 1939, 22.5 thousand people lived in the city.
During the Great Patriotic War, the Gorki patriotic underground resisted the occupiers. On October 7, 1941, the Nazis shot more than 2,500 prisoners of the Jewish ghetto. On June 26, 1944, the city was liberated by troops of the 2nd Belorussian Front.
