The history of the city dates back to November 17 (29), 1871, when traffic began on the newly built section of the Smolensk—Brest railway. Since 1894, Baranovichi has been the district town of the Minsk province. The population of Baranovichi grew rapidly, with industries, crafts, and trade developing. According to the 1897 census, the population was 8,718 people, 834 buildings had been constructed, and 4 enterprises were operating. There were also two-class schools — one for the railway and one for the voluntary society. With the start of World War I, significant Russian military forces were stationed here. From August 3, 1914, to August 8, 1915, Baranovichi was the headquarters of the Supreme Commander of the Russian military forces, Grand Duke Nikolai Nikolaevich, and Tsar Nicholas II visited the city 10 times. During World War II, on June 27, 1941, the city was occupied by Nazi forces. More than 50,000 prisoners of war and civilians were executed and tortured in the Lesnaya concentration camp located near the city. The city was liberated on July 8, 1944, as a result of the offensive by the 1st Belorussian Front and the partisans of the Baranovichi and Minsk groups on the Baranovichi-Slonim direction (Operation "Bagration"). On January 8, 1954, Baranovichi region was abolished, and its territory was included in the Brest region. Since May 1954, Baranovichi became the center of the Novomysl district, and since April 1957 — the center of the Baranovichi district. In 1970, the population was 102,000, and in 2011, it was 175,000. On May 28, 2011, the city celebrated its 140th anniversary.
