According to the currently available results of archaeological research, people have lived in these places since the 5th-6th centuries (the ancient Slavic settlement on the Berezina River, located above today's Bobruisk, is known). In addition, there are known finds of stone tools, which suggest that people could have lived in these areas as early as the Stone Age.
During the period of Kievan Rus, on the site of today's Bobruisk there was a village whose inhabitants were engaged in fishing and beaver hunting. It was first mentioned in 1387 (chronicle Bobrovsk, Bobruysk, Bobrusek) as part of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania (the center of the volost). During the times of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, there was a castle in Bobruisk (it burned down in 1649). It became part of the Russian Empire in 1792 as a town. Since 1795, it has been a district town of the Minsk province. The coat of arms was approved on January 22, 1796.
In 1810, under the leadership of K. I. Opperman, the Bobruisk fortress was built. In July 1812, Bagration gave his army a three-day rest in the fortress, leaving the sick and wounded there and adding part of the garrison. After that, the fortress, which had a garrison of 7 thousand people with 330 guns, was blockaded by French troops - first by Latour-Maubourg's detachment, then by Dombrowski's division. The blockade lasted until November, when the fortress was liberated with the approach of Tormasov's army. Future Decembrists M. P. Bestuzhev-Ryumin, S. I. Muravyov-Apostol, V. S. Norov and others served here. As a result of these events, it was decided to list the fortress in the 1st class and further strengthen it, which was entrusted to the same Opperman from 1818. The strengthening of the fortress continued until the middle of the 19th century; however, it then quickly lost its significance and was abolished in 1897.
According to the 1897 census, the city's population was 28.7 thousand residents (excluding 7 suburbs), mainly Jews (20.4 thousand or 71%). There were 40 synagogues in the city.
During the Great Patriotic War, on June 28, 1941, Bobruisk was occupied by German troops. Then, in July 1941, a battle took place in the Bobruisk area, which became part of the Battle of Smolensk. The commandant of Bobruisk was the former commandant of Orel, Adolf Gaman.
The Jews of Bobruisk were exterminated by the Nazis in the Bobruisk ghetto.
Bobruisk was liberated from the Nazi invaders on June 29, 1944 as a result of the successful Bobruisk operation (June 24 - June 29, 1944), which was part of the Belarusian operation ("Operation Bagration") - a large-scale offensive operation of the Soviet troops, carried out from June 23 to August 29, 1944.
