The strengthening of the fortress continued until the middle of the 19th century; however, it then quickly lost its significance and was abolished in 1897.
According to the 1897 census, the city's population was 28.7 thousand residents (excluding 7 suburbs), mainly Jews (20.4 thousand or 71%). There were 40 synagogues in the city.
During the Great Patriotic War, on June 28, 1941, Bobruisk was occupied by German troops. Then, in July 1941, a battle took place in the Bobruisk area, which became part of the Battle of Smolensk. The commandant of Bobruisk was the former commandant of Orel, Adolf Gaman.
